Born the youngest son of Cassius David and Emma Louise Wyman Hayward. Brothers were Albert Wyman and Lawrence Hayward.

He married Lura Schlegel, dtr of Carl Edward and Minnie Eldridge Schlegel from Davenport, Scott, IA born 22 Mar 1893. They were married at Davenport's Outing Club on Brady St. on 1 Mar 1917.

They had 6 children: Eugene Jr b 9 Nov 1917 in Great Falls, MT, was working for Armour & Co in St. Louis when he disappeared in 1945. No trace was ever found.; Albert Wyman b 21 Apr 1919 in Great Falls, d 13 Jul 1999 in Honolulu; Mary b 25 Aug 1920 in Great Falls, Suzanne b 19 Jun 1922 in Cimarron, NM, Lura b 16 Dec 1923 in Cimarron, and Carl Edward b 10 Oct 1926 in Cimarron, lived on a ranch near Ft. Sumner, DeBaca, NM where he raised horses.

"Gene" graduated from Iowa State University in Ames, IA where he earned a BS in agriculture. They lived on a ranch in Great Falls, MT where "Gene" ws employed as a ranch superintendent.

In 1920, the family moved to Cimarron, Colfax, NM where Gene was the mgr of the 300,000A Phillips Ranch which later became Philmont, the national Boy Scout ranch.

The Haywards purchased the H&H Ranch near Cimarron where they lived until 1969 when they sold the ranch and retired from the cattle business. Both Lura and Eugene took active leadership roles in agriculture organizations which helped improve the lives of ranchers and the cattle business in northern NM.

He was president of the New Mexico Cattlemen's Assn from 1943-1946, and director of the Raton First National Bank for roughly 40 years.

Lura died 10 May 1970 in Honolulu, HI, Gene died 20 Nov 1981 in Santa Barbara, CA.
