Shelby W. Baker, 81, died Saturday, May 24, 2008, in SwedishAmerican Hospital, Rockford. He was born Oct. 4, 1926, near Seward, the son of Samuel and Nellie (Stotler) Baker. He married Shirley D. Botten on Feb. 16, 1957, in Lee. Shelby owned and operated the Byron Grain Terminal for 25 years. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of the Byron VFW Post, the Middle Creek Presbyterian Church, and loved to go dancing at the Belvidere Moose Lodge. Shelby use to raise standard breed harness race horses and buy and sell antiques. He is preceded by his parents; wife, Shirley; brothers, Roy, Laverne and Robert Baker; and sisters, Evelyn Stahl and Elizabeth Cook. Survived by his children, Jane Baker of Byron, Sam (Lori) Baker of Sterling, Valerie Ruhayel of Carmel, Ind., and Elizabeth (Aaron) Guenther of Green Bay, Wis.; brother, Lauren Baker of Byron; and grandchildren, Lacey, Jarret, Erin, Jacob, Samuel, Adam and Jenna. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, in Middle Creek Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Anita Stuart-Steva pastor officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening in Farrell Holland Gale Funeral Home, 506 W. Merchant St., Bryon. A memorial fund is established in his name.
