Hymm writer, Inventor. Born in Connecticut, he became a gifted musician and attended the Woodstock Academy. Graduating in 1848, he published over 2,000 hymms. Also a successful businessman, Doane became president of the J.A. Fay Woodworking Machinery Company. While not at work, he was a Sunday School superintendent and a choir director at the Mount Auburn Baptist Church. The son of a cotton manufacturer, he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1860 to become a partner at the Fay Company. Doane compiled over forty books and wrote 2,300 songs, ballads, and cantatas. He received an honorary degree of Doctor of Music at Dennison University in 1875. He was awarded the French Legion Medal of Honor for his woodworking machinery inventions. He last lived at Watch Hill, Rhode Island and died at South Orange, New Jersey in 1915 when he was 83 years old. Doane Memorial Music Building in Chicago, Illinois is named for him.
