"Though his cemetery marker clearly shows a birth year of 1872, James Thomas Key appears on the 1870 Federal Census with his parents -- listed on this record as "Fancis M. Key" and "Mary A. E. Key" -- at Five Mile in Hale County, Alabama. The 1870 record was counted on 4 Aug 1870 and indicates James Thomas Key was nine months old at the time, suggesting an actual birth date closer to Nov 1869."
Also of note, the 1900 census lists James' birth date as Sept 1864
