Mattias Höglund (Americanized to Hoaglund) was born Aug 15, 1837 in Söderby-Karl parish in Stockholm läns, Sweden. He was the son of Johan Mattson and Martha Molin. He was the oldest of 5 sons. His brothers were Johan (b 24 Jan 1839), Jons (b 29 Aug 1840), Eric (b 20 Sep 1843), and Peter (b 4 Sep 1846). Mattias and his brothers were sailors. I have no record of any of the brothers being married. Johan and Jon were still living in Sweden in 1894. Eric and Peter immigrated to America and homesteaded in the Lodgepole NE area.

Mattias married Brittia 'Bertha' Katherine Nilsdotter Lindberg on 13 Nov 1870 in Ytterlännäs parish, Västernorrland läns, Sweden. Her birth name was Nilsdotter but her father changed his surname to Lindberg and Brittia used that as her maiden name.

Mattias and Brittia had 9 children Cajsa Brita (b 6 Aug 1863 - d 27 Dec 1863), Marta Catharina 'Carrie' (b 7 Sep 1870 - d 12 May 1947), Brita Mathilda 'Tillie' (b 12 Oct 1873 - d 16 Jan 1963), Nels Eric (b 20 May 1876 - d 15 May 1956), Anna Elizabeth 'Alice'(b 2 Jun 1878 - d 19 Jan 1955), Johan Peter 'John' (b 2 Nov 1880 - d 26 Apr 1938). These children were born in Ytterlännäs parish, Västernorrland läns, Sweden. The youngest 3 sons were born in Phelps Co. NE. They are Carl 'Otto' (b 29 May 1883 - d 9 Aug 1956), Victor Oscar (b 19 Mar 1886 - d 16 Mar 1965), and Arthur T (b 28 Jul 1888 - d 6 Aug 1958)

The family included Mattias' mother immigrated in 1881 and settled in Phelps Co, NE south of Loomis, NE. Family story tells that the ship was caught in a storm on the crossing and the captain was drunk. When Mattias approached him about the storm the captain told him to take care of the ship and he was responsible for saving the ship from wrecking. He homesteaded and farmed for the remaining time in his life.

Mattias died 21 Jul 1915 in Laird Township, Phelps Co. NE
