Former State Representative for Ohio who was killed in a single engine plane crash along with five passengers. He was piloting the plane when it crashed shortly after take off.




Eugene "Gene" E. Damschroder, 86, of Fremont, died Sunday, June 8, 2008. He was born January 14, 1922 in Sandusky County to Frederick A. and Nellie R. (Schwartz) Damschroder. He was a 1940 graduate of Elmore High School and also attended various Colleges during his Navy career. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during WWII. Gene married Lulu Hufford on February 14, 1945 in Corpus Christi, TX and she survives in Fremont. Gene and Lulu Owned and Operated Fremont Airport. He was a former Republican State Representative for Ohio from 1973 to 1983. He was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church; the Fremont Lions Club; AOPA; VFW; American Legion; Fremont Moose and Eagles. Gene was a member of the Farm Bureau and Fremont Chamber of Commerce. Gene was passionate about politics and flying. He also loved to teach people to fly and play Square Dance music with his fiddle and banjo. Gene is survived by his wife, Lulu Damschroder, Fremont, OH; children, Dr. Bonnie (R.K) Jones, Springfield, VA, Annette (Ron) Williams of Oklahoma, Rex (Rhonda) Damschroder, David (Melissa) Damschroder, both of Fremont, Cheri Damschroder (Paul Dulin), Hatch, NM; brother, Dick Damschroder, Fremont; eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers. Visitation: Wednesday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home & Crematory, 425 E. State St., Fremont, OH. Service: Thursday, June 12, 2008, 10 am at St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 N. Clover St, Fremont, OH with a Visitation at the Church one hour prior to the Service, Rev. Robert Quillen officiating.
Burial: Elmore Harris Cemetery, Elmore, OH with Military Honors conducted by the VFW and American Legion of Fremont and Clyde. Memorials: St. John's Memorial Fund
