Born in Salem, New Hampshire, he enlisted as a Private on 11 September 1862 at the age of 23. While serving in Co. K 15th N.H. Infantry, he died of disease (febris remittens) on 02 August 1863 in Washington Hospital at Memphis TN. His brother, Benjamin W. Cluff also died in the Civil War.
