Rev. Luther Wells Childs
Rev. Luther Wells Childs, pastor of the First Baptist Church at Centerville and son of Ebert and Temperance Wells Childs, was born on a farm in Appanoose County, Iowa, near Coatsville, September 18, 1884, and passed away at the Ottumwa Hospital in Ottumwa on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 1949, at the age of 64 years, 3 months and 25 days.
He was graduated from the Moulton High School and later attended the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.
On January 6, 1909, he was united in marriage to Miss Lesta Stansberry of Moulton who survives. To this union one child was born, Boyd W. of Peoria, Ill., who survives.
Rev. and Mrs. Childs established their home on a farm near Coatsville, Mo. Form 1912 to 1923 he served as pastor and evangelist in several churches in Appanoose and other counties in Iowa and in northern Missouri. He was ordained in the spring of 1913. He was pastor of the Baptist hurch at Blakesburg during 1923 and 1924. From 1924 to 1930 he was pastor of the Finley Avenue Baptist Church in Ottumwa.
He came to Centerville in 1930 where he began a patorate at the First Baptist Church where he had started on his 19th year as pastor when death come. During his Centerville pastorate the membership increased from 300 to 900. In 1934-35 he was Iowa Department Commander of the Sons of Union Veterans and later served two terms as national chaplin of that organization. He attended the National Encampment in Cleveland, Ohio, in August 1947. He was also an official of the Appanoose County Ministerial Association who tendered resolutions.
In addition to the loved ones mentioned above, he is survived by his mother, now 84, of Coatsville, 5 sisters, Mrs. Tom Guinn, Hammond, Indiana; Mrs. Cuma Probasco, and Mrs. J. Ray Henson of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Bert Dohl, Huron, South Dakota; and Mrs. Clifton Gorman of Moberly, Missouri. Two grandchildren also survive, Jackie Childs, 6, and Jerry Childs, 4, of Peoria, Ill.
He was precede in death by his father and one brother, Jack Childs. His death is mourned not only in the home and by the family, which he loved so much, but by members of the churches where he had ministered as pastor and in his evangelistic work, and especially in the Centerville church and community where he had served so many years.
The funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church in Centerville at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 15, 1949, in charge uf Rev. W. M. Cleeton, of Seymour, assisted by Dr. Walter P. Halbert and Rev. James R. Fleck, of Des Moines. Burial was inthe Coatsville cemetery.
