Dies After Long Illness
Dr. Leslie Errol Dean, 80, 121 E. Edwards St., died at 9 a.m. today at the St. Francis hospital where he had been a patient one week. Dr. Dean, who was the Nodaway County coroner, had been in failing health for several months. He had lived his entire life in Maryville. Dr. Dean was born Jan. 31, 1876, at Maryville, the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. John W. Dean, and was married in August, 1924 to Miss Doris Fischer, who survives. He attended Maryville Seminary and was a graduate of the Kentucky School of Medicine. Dr. Dean was from a family of medical doctors. His father practiced medicine in Maryville for many years and Dr. Dean was associated with him for 12 years. He also had two brothers, the late Dr. Charles Dean and Dr. L.P. Dean, who were doctors.
Served in World War I
He served as a surgeon in World War I with the rank of first lieutenant. He had practiced medicine for 56 years in Maryville, and was the college physician with the Naval unit at the State College during World War II. Dr. Dean had served as county coroner for the past six years. Dr. Dean was a member of the Nodaway AF and AM lodge, of which he was the past master; past president of the Nodaway County Medical Society; a member of the American Legion; American Association of Railway Surgeons, Missouri State Medical Association, the Atchison – Nodaway – Worth- Gentry Medical Society and the Maryville Methodist church. Survivors include his widow, of the home; four daughters, Mrs. George Trapp, St. Joseph; Mrs. Lloyd Haberly, Rutherford, N. J., Mrs. Orville Adams, Denver, Colo. and Mrs. Russell Terhune, Belton, Mo.; three grandsons, George Trapp, Jr. who is a student at John Hopkins Medical School, Baltimore, Mr. Edward Trapp, St. Joseph and David Haberly, Rutherford, N. J.
Funeral services Thursday
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Maryville church with the Rev. Monk Bryan officiating. Burial will be in the Miriam cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
