Stephen Long Cantrell was less than two years old when his parents made the move from McMinn County, Tennessee to Marion County, Alabama where he grew to manhood. He was recorded at home in 1850 and 1860. He accompanied his parents to Illinois prior to the war.

"He enlisted in Richview, Illinois the 25 March 1864 as a private in Company I, 44th Illinois Infantry Volunteers and honorably discharged as a Corporal 25 September 1865 at Camp Irwin, Texas. After the war he married Martha Jane Sullivan 11 July 1869 at Murphreesboro, Jackson County, Illinois by Rev. Dave Gregory. She first married James M. Davis 27 June 1865 in Illinois. He served in the 3rd Michigan Cavalry, they had one son Eli who was born October 1866 in Illinois. James M. Davis died 16 October 1867. Stephen reared this son and in 1900, he was still living at home.

"Shortly after Stephens marriage, he accompanied his brother William Francis Cantrell on a move to Webster County, Missouri, where they joined other members of the family. In 1870, they were recorded in Hazelwood Township, next to the farm of his cousin, Robert Cantrell, son of Isaac, and also next to the farm of his Aunt Nancy Smith Cantrell, widow of his Uncle Gabriel. Soon thereafter, Stephen moved his family to northern Arkansas and in 1880, they were recorded in Hampton Township, Marion County, and he was a farmer. A number of second cousins and a brother, George David, lived in the county. His brother's wife, Margaret Caroline was a siste to Martha Jane. In 1900, Stephen and his family were recorded in Prairie Township, Boone County, which was in the area of Everton. Three of the children, the stepson and a grandson were recorded at home.

"In 1910, Stephen was a farm owner in Prairie Township, Boone County, Arkansas. Two of the children and the grandchild was at home. Stephen died August 1, 1926, at Boone County, Arkansas. He is buried at the Crawford Cemetery, north of Everton, and his stone is a government issue and list the war services. His wife, Martha Jane, lived to be almost 91, on the 5th December 1938, she fell and fractured her left hip, she died 19 December 1938 and is next to Stephen in an unmarked grave.
