Mrs. Laura Swift Shepard sweetly fell asleep on Friday morning at two o'clock, in the eightieth year of her age. She was the daughter of Christopher Ripley, born November 28th, 1820 at Worthington Ohio. She was a sister of the late General Ripley. coming to Ogdensburg in 1828, she was married to the late Charles Shepard on May 3rd, 1839 by Rev. J. Savage, D.D. the family were warm patriots and much stirred for all the interests of our country in the war of 61-65 Charles W, their eldest, was killed in the battle at Cold Harbor on June 3rd, 1864. the remaining children are Misses Julia A. and Charlotte L, who still occupy the homestead, George B. Shepard, one of our fellow citizens, and Mrs. Laura S. Chapman of Morristown. Mrs. Shepard's sister, Mrs. A.B. James, still survives, to link pleasantly and honorably, interesting memories of long years with these auspicious families. Mrs. Shepard became a communicant of the Presbyterian church of this city in 1844, and gave a life-long and earnest service to every good interest, both inside and outside of its labors for christian work. Her winning ways and gentle words and poetic pen, as well as conscientious christian living continued as long as her physical energies enabled her to give evidence of the true graces of her Christianity. her going home on Thanksgiving Day became the royal entrance to the eternal Thanksgiving of the Father's house.
