One time owner and proprietor of the Johnson House, Ogdensburg. During the War of Rebellion he raised a company of calvary and fought for the Union. After the war, he moved to Farmersville, Ontario where he operated a farm. In the days of hand fire engines, he was foreman of No. 3 and his company's Honniman Tub was the crack machine of Northern New York. His wife, who was living at Brockville, was notified there of his suicide.

After leaving the United States, he settled upon a fine farm. A few years later, he sold it to his brother and entered largely into speculation. Being unsuccessful, he one day drove to Brockville, disposed of his horse and carriage, and disappeared. He was never afterwards seen, and every effort to discover his whereabouts proved futil, though rumors came that he had been seen in the far West.
