Ogdensburg Daily Journal - May 22, 1898
Ela N. Merriam died suddenly this morning at his residence on the corner of Franklin and Knox streets, from apoplexy. Yesterday morning he attended church at St. John's near his residence, and in the afternoon he attended the funeral services of the late Alexander H. Lord at the Presbyterian church. He complained of a pain in his chest but was cheerful and appeared to be in his usual health. He retired at the usual hour at night, and about one o'clock Mrs. Merriam was awakened by his heavy, stertorous breathing. She arose and spoke to him and receiving no reply became alarmed and aroused the household. Dr. Benton, his family physician, was sent for, but as he was not to be found, Dr. Bell was summoned. Mr. Merriam, however, was dead when the physician arrived, having expired at 1:30 o'clock.

Mr. Merriam was born in Leyden, Lewis county, May 14th, 1822. He was the eldest son of Gen. Ela Merriam, at that time one of the most enterprising business men in Northern New York. He received his business education at Mr. Charles Brown's Institute at Demark, but at the age of 13 he was placed in the Lewis County Bank at Martinsburg. Here he remained seven years, returning for a time to his father's farm and in 1845 coming to Ogdensburg, where he established an exchange office. In September following he entered the employ of the Lake Ontario Steamboat Company, remaining in their service until the close of the season of 1846. He then re-entered Lewis County Bank where he remained a few years as cashier, and afterward engaged in private banking at Boonville, where he married Miss Mary Hulburt, of that place. In October 1854, Mr. Merriam again removed to Ogdensburg where as cashier he conducted the Oswegatchie Bank from its organization until its close in 1866. He then continued the same official connection with the private banking firms of Averell & Chapman and Averells, Chapman & Bean for a number of years. On the first of January 1880, with capitalists he established the National Bank of Ogdensburg, and as cashier has since managed it.

During his residence here he has been one of the leading men of the city. His unquestioned integrity and financial ability won him the respect and confidence of the business men of teh city who recognized in him a conservative and safe banker and an honest man. Naturally kind of heart, he took an interest in the welfare of the community in which he cast his lot, and was ever ready to assist in any enterprise to promote its prosperity. He has represented the town upon the Board of Supervisors, of which body he was elected chairman, has been chairman of the Republican County Committee of St. Lawrence, several times a member of the Board of Education, member of the Common Council, and for many years president of the Musical Union.

In all these public positions and many others he has performed the duties faithfully and with the sincere aim of best serving those on whose behalf he was acting. His life was graced with a much larger share of the virtues than is usually found in a single personality, and he richly deserved the esteem in which he was held in the community.

His private life was unusually happy. He lived unonstentatiously, yet surrounded by the comforts and refinements of life.

His death will be deeply and sincerely regretted by all who knew him and will be a keen and unexpected sorrow to those who knew him best. All will extend sympathy to his family in their grief.

His wife and daughter, Nellie, survive him.
