Born in Qormi, Malta, Agius began his novitiate year with the Franciscan Capuchin Friars at the age of 19 under the direction of Friar Emanuel Lateo. Ordained to the priesthood on March 14, 1959, he undertook a course in pastoral theology at the Lateran University in Rome, Italy, and back to his native island, worked in several hospitals, including those of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Luke's and Rużar Briffa. An active member of the Marian Movement, founded in 1972, by the Italian priest Stefano Gobbi, and of the Eucharistic Cenacle, founded by George Grima, due to health reasons Friar Mikiel had to be admitted to the named Home for Elderly Priests in the year 2004.
