Dr. Heyssel, 72, of Seaford, passed away in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was a child of the late Clarence D. and Meta C. (nee Reusser) Heyssel.

He was the husband of Maria McDaniel Heyssel (born 1934), to whom he was married for forty-six years, and with whom he shares a tombstone.

In addition to Maria, Dr. Heyssel was survived by son James and his wife Tisha of Cooksville, MD; daughter Lisa H. Flexner and her fiance Bill Rinaca, both of Ellicott City, MD; son Robert M., Jr. and his wife Christine of Huntington, Long Island, NY; son Kurt F. and his wife Meg of Timonium, MD; daughter Helen "Peri" Glaser and her husband Werner of Wiener Neustadt, Austria; sister Mary and her husband Dr. Roger Bumgarner of Columbia, MO; mother-in-law Estella P. McDaniel of Seaford; nine grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew.

Dr. Heyssel graduated from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1953. He went to work for Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1968 and was President and CEO of Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health Systems when he retired in 1992. He was Chairman of the American Association of Medical Colleges. Over the years he received many professional honors and honorary degrees from many hospitals, including Johns Hopkins. He was also active in many civic organizations in Baltimore and Seaford.

A Memorial Mass was offered on Friday, June 15 at 11a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Stein Highway, Seaford. There was also a Memorial Service on Saturday, June 16 at 11a.m. at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Hurd Hall, Baltimore.

Dr. Heyssel's final arrangements were handled by the Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St., Seaford.

Donations may be made in Dr. Heyssel's memory to the Robert M. and Maria M. Heyssel Fund at Johns Hopkins Hospital, c/o Development Office, 600 N. Wolfe St., Baltimore, MD 21287, or to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, 801 Middleford Rd., Seaford, DE 19973.
