In 1883, the pensioners list, Macon County, Illinois, lists Whiteside, Joel, Niantic "g.s.w. both thighs" (gun shot wounds both thighs)who received $12.00 pension.

According to the Illinois Civil War Detail Report, Private Joel Whitesides was in Company E, of the 61st IL US Inf. His residence was Kane, Greene Co, IL. He was 30 years old, with dark hair, gray eyes. He was born in Madison Co., IL (which at the time covered most of the lower portion of the state). He joined the service on Feb 4, 1862, for 3 years. He was Discharged for disability on account of wounds received at the Battle of Shiloh. In 1880, Joel was 69, working as a farmer for James Austin {who married his daughter Cecelia} in Shelby County, Illinois.

Joel was the son of General Samuel Whiteside and Nancy Miller Whiteside,and was possibly named for Samuel's brother Joel. He was buried at Long Point Cemetery, south of Niantic, Illinois, not far from his brother, William Modrel who was just a year younger.
