INVALID PASSES AWAY June 15, 1923 -

Death Claims Mrs. Ellen Hawk, Long-time Resident of Niantic

Mrs. Sarah Ellen Hawk, a resident of Niantic for more than sixty-five years, died at her home just before 10 o'clock -Tuesday night. She had been an invalid for twenty-two years but had been confined to her bed for only three weeks. Rheumatism and complications caused her demise.

The decedent, whose maiden name was Faris, was born near New Market, Highland county, 0hio, on July 18, 1845. She came to Niantic with her parents, Eli S. and Lucille Pulliam Faris, in 1857 and had been a resident of the community ever since. On Feb. 26, 1863, she was united in marriage to John Armstrong Hawk of Niantic, who died in 1909.

To this union were born -three children-William of Niantic, Mrs. Minnie Whaley of Aberdeen, S. D.. and Mrs. Earl E. Smith of Sioux Falls, S. D.

Mrs. Hawk was a charter member of the Niantic Christian church, joining that organization on Jan. 31, 1861. She was baptized in Sanders ford. The decedent belonged to Wisdom Rebekah lodge No. 485 of Niantic, and before she became an invalid, she was a worker in a number of different organizations in the community.

Besides her children, Mrs. Hawk leaves five grandchildren Shelby, Ralph and Frank Whaley of Aberdeen, S. D., Leo Whaley of Constantinople, Turkey, and Bert Whaley of San Francisco, Cal., the last two mentioned being members of the United States Navy.

The funeral services were held in the Christian church in Niantic at 4 o'clock,Thursday afternoon, the pastor, Rev. J. C. Mullins, officiating. Mrs. W. C. Moore, Mrs. Frank Downing, Rev. Mullins and H. B. Hill sang. The pallbearers were Louis C. Wree, George Stahl, M.E. Lockart, Walter Pritchett, Edgar Parks and William Lawton. The flowers were carried by Mrs. Frank Himstedt and Misses Thelma and Ayliffe Hawk,Lela Phelan and Ruth Himstedt.
Internment was made at Long Point cemetery.

Among the persons from a distance present at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Earl Smith of Sioux Falls, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Grider, Mr. and Mrs.Howard Smith, Mr. And Mrs. Neeley Smith and Mrs. Clara Smith of Springfield; Mrs. Ollie Bond, Miss Mae Jacobsen and Harold Jacobsen of Brocton, and Mr.and Mrs. Ray Kunkle, W. D. Kunkle and Will Pierce of; Decatur. Mrs. Hawk's only sister, Jennie Jacobsen of Brocton, was not able to be present.
