Was a lifelong Republican and was very active in the party. Was present on the dais at the Laying of the Cornerstone of the Court House in Mineola, LI, NY in 1900 by Gov. Theodore Roosevelt. His obit reads in part: Uncle John Smith, a Nestor of Freeport, friend of Russell Sage. Born in Merrick, he became one of the prominent residents of the South Side.
