He enlisted at age 16 in the Twentieth Texas Cavalry, Confederate Army. After the Civil War he studied for one year at Dolbear's Commercial College in New Orleans. He worked for one year for the Texas and Pacific Railroad in Marshall. He then entered the grocery business, eventually owning stores at Wills Point, Tyler and Greenville. He also served one term as a county commissioner in Van Zandt County. In 1876 he married Annie Statler. He came to Dallas in 1885 and operated grocery stores in the area until his retirement. He was buried in his Confederate Army uniform.
