Beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and dear friend to many, Howard Cropper Nelson, passed away December 9, 1986 of heart failure.
Born June 25, 1927 in Delta, Utah to Lawrence and Momle Cropper Nelson. Moved to Midvale at age 9 and was graduated from Jordan High School.
Married Elaine Avery, February 14, 1948. Later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Businessman for many years, Howard began his career as owner of Nelson's Texaco Service in Midvale. Later he moved to Kearns and established Nelson's Texaco Service and Kearns Bowling Lanes. He also owned Nelson Car Sales. Howard then returned to Midvale, and was subsequently involved in other business affairs, including Nelson Enterprises, and had business connections in China.
Howard loved sports and was an avid bowler, skier and golfer during his life. He also enjoyed basketball and baseball. Veteran world War II, U.S. Navy. He loved his country very much, and studied the Constitution and was a member of the National Center of Constitutional Studies.
An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Howard was a Scout and Explorer leader, having served on the Great Salt Lake Council of Scouting, Teacher, Home Teacher, Elders Quorum President, and was a High Priest at the time of his death serving as Temple Seminar Instructor.
Survived by: his dear wife; three sons and their wives, Frank and Patricia Mecham; Lonnie and Cindy Nelson; and Jason M; three daughters and their husbands, Shauna and Jerry Jones, Melissa and Dale Mark, Rebecca and David Haury; foster children, Mr. and Mrs. Miles Shepherd, Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Knight, Mr. and Mrs. Preston Kelly, and Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Lo; twenty-nine grandchildren, brothers and sisters, Dee, Ralph, Harold, Carl, Mrs. George (Maxine) Piper, and Cora Jean Kay.
Howard loved life, the gospel, his family, friends. He always had an optimistic outlook. Always willing to help anyone in need. We will miss him.
