Born in Popetto di Tresana, Massa Carrara, on September 27, 1870, to Giovanni Lorgna and Maria Fiasella, both agricultures, aged 11, he was sent to Torrile, Parma, to study under the guidance of his Uncle, Father Luigi Lorgna, at the time parish priest of the named village. Two years later, he entered the Seminary of Parma, where he met illustrious ecclesiastical figures, including Don Andrea Ferrari, future Cardinal Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Milan and Don Guido Conforti, future Bishop of Parma and Founder of the Saverian Missionaries, the first, a future blessed, the second a future saint.
At the age of 19, Lorgna entered to Order of Friars Preachers and received the Dominican habit at the Convent of Bologna. Ordained a presbyter at the age of 23, in 1893, he underwent further studies in philosophy and theology and was in turn named professor of Holy Scripture, propadeautics and Church History within the Dominican Studium of Bologna.
After serving as vice–curate of the Santuario della Madonna di Fontanellato, Friar Giocondo was named parish priest of the populated and difficult parish of SS. Giovanni e Paolo of Venice, a position he kept until his demise at the age of 58.
A great devotee of Blessed Imelda Lambertini (1320 – 1333), he founded a spiritual group, under the name Adoratori del SS. Sacramento and consecrated his parish to the Most Blessed Sacrament. He furthermore was the founder of the Asilo degli Angeli Custodi and of the Orfanatrofio del Rosario for Orphan Children, the Caritas Sant'Antonio for emarginated people and the Caritas Beato Giacomo Salomoni during the Great War.
Co-founder of the Patronato Divina Provvidenza, he introduced in his parish the Pia Unione Missionaria, the Catholic Action, the Opera Santa Dorotea and the daily reciting of the Rosary together with his parishioners.
Padre Giocondo Pio Lorgna died of inoperable stomach cancer in Venice on July 8, 1928, and lies buried in the Cappella del Rosario inside the Venetian Basilica of SS. Giovanni e Paolo, where he served for so long as parish priest. Originally interred at the cemetery of S. Michele, his remains were transferred to the named basilica on October 2, 1939.
His nuns of the congregations he founded for educational purposes of orphan children are present today in Brazil, Cameroon, Philippines, Albania and Bolivia. The diocesan process for his beatification was concluded on October 10, 1955.
