Also, Dickson Kirk wrote and signed a note giving his permission for a marriage license to be issued to his daughter, Paulina, in 1849. In contrast to many similar documents from this time period, this note was well-constructed, his handwriting was clear and legible, and the spelling was near perfect, suggesting that Dickson had benefitted from a significant amount of education."
