Helen Uhlmann, 77, of Fergus Falls, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at her home with her three sons at her bedside.

She was born Jan. 4, 1923, in Milwaukee, Wis., the daughter of John and Eleanor (Hardtke) Schmechel. She was raised in Milwaukee and graduated from Custer High School. Late in 1945, she married Arthur Max Uhlmann at North Presbyterian
Church in Milwaukee. After their marriage the couple lived in the city of East Grandville, Wis. In 1960, they moved to Houston, Texas, where they lived until 1981, when they moved to Ham Lake. In the mid 1980s, she moved to Fergus Falls, where she had lived since. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and its circle. She enjoyed knitting afghans, doll collecting, German cooking, especially dumplings, and she loved her family very much.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Arthur, who died in 1977; a sister, Ruth Wood; and two brothers, John and Howard Schmechel.

Survivors include three sons, Arthur of Houston, Texas, James (Teresa) and John (Monica), all of Underwood; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a brother, Jim (Minnie) of Milwaukee, Wis. Memorials are preferred to Lakeland Hospice, Fergus Falls.

Visitation: two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Olson Funeral Home Chapel, Fergus Falls. Clergy: Rev. Curt Rotto.
