He was born near Marshfield, on January 13, 1915, the son of Hershal and Golda Long Groff. He had lived in West Lebanon all of his life, most of the time in West Lebanon. He was married August 24, 1937 in Tipton, to Alberta Leona Cronkhite, who survives.
He had been a farm laborer and manager of grain elevators. He managed the Rilesyburg Grain Elevator at Rileysburg for several years. He retired in 1975 and then was employed as the groundskeeper for Interstate Sand and Gravel Co., in Warren County.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving with his wife are three sons, Ruby (Doris), Route 2, Williamsport, Max (Harriet) of Route 1, West Lebanon; Hershal (Pam) of Route 1, West Lebanon; five daughters, Judy Colby (Norman), Westfield, Lola (Buddy) Tindal, West Lebanon, Debbie (Robert) Birge, Romney, Lisa Ware, Route 2, Williamsport, Lori (Ed) Clarkston, Covington; a dear friend, Patricia Ware, with whom he shared his home for several years; two sisters, Anna (Courtney) Blacketer, Route 1, West Lebanon, Eileen (Ivan) Lape, Route 1, West Lebanon; and a brother, Charles (Gloria) Richmond, California; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A son, Rick, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
Visitation was at Fisher Funeral Home, West Lebanon, from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, October 29. Funeral services are to be at 11 a.m. today with the Rev. Grover Williams officiating. Burial will be in West Lebanon Cemetery.” – Fountain County Neighbor, Attica, Indiana, October 30, 1992
