Corey Lee Wieneke, 22, died Tues, Oct 13, 1992 at his home near West Liberty.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 am Friday morning at St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Liberty with the Rev. Tim Bernamann officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty.
Friends may call from 2 - 8 pm Thurs at the West Liberty Chapel of the Barker Funeral Home, where a Christian Wake service will be hld at 7:30 pm. A memorial fund has been established.
He was born Mar 25, 1970 in Muscatine, the son of James and Susan Winfield Wieneke. He was a 1988 graduate of the West Liberty High School.
He was employed as a bar tender at Wink's Tap in West Liberty for several years.
Survivors include his parents, James and Susan Wieneke; his fiancée Jody Hotz; grandparents Betty Wieneke and Edmund and Luetta Winfield; great-grand mother Helen Janney, all of West Liberty; and great-grandmother Helen Corssett of Iowa City.
∼Dateline NBC aired a two-hour-long program on January 17, 2020, regarding the 1992 cold case murder of Corey Wieneke of West Liberty, Iowa. Wieneke was found bludgeoned to death in his rural home in 1992. For 27 years, no one was charged in his death.
In 2018, a sexual friend of Corey's, Annette Cahill, was charged with first degree murder after a woman came forward and said she heard Cahill tearfully confess to the murder in late 1992, when the witness was then nine-years-old. Cahill was convicted of second degree murder in September of 2019, at her second trial, although her attorney argued there was no physical evidence linking her to the scene of the crime. She has appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court, which is ongoing.
