He was a son of Thomas Dowdell and Catherine Kerney. He married Lydia Jane Pierce, daughter of Benjamin Pierce and Lydia Ann Evernham, about 1879 in Hardin County, Iowa. Robert and Lydia were the parents of Marion Clarence Dowdell (1880-1963). His second marriage was to LaVilla A. Moler. Robert served for twelve years in the South Dakota Legislature.
