LOUISE HERTEL
Louise Hertel, 65, of Benjamin died early Monday a.m. at Abilene Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday at 1st United Methodist Church, Benjamin with Rev. Virgil Ichertez, Rev. Dennis Duke and Rev. Larry Neal officiating. Burial will follow in the Benjamin Cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hertel was born on September 17, 1934, in Benjamin, Tx. She married Donnie Hertel on May 5, 1955, in Crowell, Texas. She was the secretary to the Knox County Judge, David Perdue. She had also worked in the Knox County Clerk's Office and the US Post Office.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was treasurer for the church. She had served several years on the Benjamin School Board.
Survivors include her husband, Don Hertel of Benjamin; mother, Leola K. Isbell of Benjamin; three sons, Scott Hertel of Dallas, Craig Hertel of Gainesville, Kent Hertel of Coppell; one granddaughter, Megan Hertel.
She was preceded in death by one son, Donald Dale in 1957.
Pallbearers will be Zeke Duke, Phil Boone, Tracy Cartwright, Ronnie Verhalen, Wyman Meinzer, Dickie Mc Canlies, Leroy West, Stanton Brown.
Honorary pallbearers will be David Perdue, Bobby D. Burnett, Vic Lowrey, Charles Durham, W.T. Cartwright, Jackie Young.

This a slightly edited copy of a note from a high school classmate who has recently moved back to Benjamin, Reba (Cox) Morrill.
Charlie and I both went to Louise's funeral today but I can't tell you whether Nelda was there. I don't think I would recognize her if I were to see her and there were so many people at the funeral that many could not get inside the church. We got there probably ten minutes early and had to park on the west side of the schoolhouse. Cars were parked all the way around the block where the church sits and about two deep in front of the schoolhouse. There must have been half a dozen police, sheriff and DPS
cars parked there.
We couldn't get inside at first but just before the service they were finding spots for a few of us at a time and we sat in the back of the church. The fellowship hall and vestibule in between were packed with
people too. There were so many flowers that we couldn't see the speakers and singers except one at a time as they stood at the microphone.
After the service people from outside filed in and there were quite a number of uniformed officers, deputies, bailiffs, etc., as well as many others who hadn't been able to get inside the church.
We didn't go to the cemetery. Besides the crowd being so large, I had to take Mother to the doctor in Haskell early this afternoon. Louise certainly was well loved and had many friends paying respects. I don't know how Donnie will get along without her.
