Mr. Baker, 78, of Manalapan, died Feb. 10 at Victoria Health Care Center, Matawan. Born in New Orleans, he had lived in Bowie, Md., before moving to Manalapan in 1977. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a communicant of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Manalapan, where he also served as an usher. A graduate of Loyola University, New Orleans, he received a master of science degree from the University of Detroit and was a member of both schools' alumni associations. Mr. Baker was a chemist for Shell Oil Co., the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency, with 36 years of federal government service prior to retiring in 1996. He was predeceased by his first wife, Betty McGeever Baker, as well as a daughter, Patricia Baker-Medina, in 1997. Surviving are his wife, Jean Carroll Baker; four sons, Daniel L. Baker of Jackson, James M. Baker of Honeoye Falls, N.Y., Michael T. Baker of Barnegat, and Timothy J. Baker of Sumter, S.C.; three daughters, Carol G. Baker of Spokane, Wash., Mary McMahon of Brick and Maureen J. Jordan of Howell; a sister, Julia Catherine Hamburg of Hammond, La., and 21 grandchildren. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Thomas More Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Birthright of Freehold, 80 W. Main St., Freehold 07728; or the Samaritan Center, 3 Harrison Ave., Englishtown 07726.
