Ellen Anderson Routson
Ellen Hannah Anderson Routson, 77, Weiser, died Tuesday, June 25, 1996 at the home of her daughter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 1996 at the Weiser LDS Stake Center. Friends and family may call from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the LDS Stake Center prior to service. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weiser, under the direction of Thomason Funeral Home.
Ellen, born January 29, 1919, at Weiser, Idaho, is the third daughter and fifth child of Lydia Louise Prince and Samuel Oscar Anderson. Her growing up and school years were spent in Weiser, on Sunnyside except for a short time in Union, Oregon. She graduated in 1937 from Weiser High School and was in the top ten academically in her high school class. She always loved school and learning and her friends, and especially enjoyed participating in basketball, volleyball, softball, speech, drama, and the dances. She worked at the Metropole and the Mertz store as a clerk and also as a bookkeeper at Demry and Darby, an appliance store.
On September 11, 1937, she married Robert (Bob) G. Routson, her high school sweetheart. They built a home on East Commercial and Bob was employed at the Weiser Iron Works. They also spent several summers in the beautiful back country of Idaho near Big Creek where they worked in the family mine with his father John Routson. Ellen loved the time they spent there. Due to an asthmatic condition caused by the dust and fumes of the iron works and because Bob was a farmer at heart, they decided to purchase a farm on Cove Road east of Weiser where Ellen and Bob have lived for 51 years, farming and raising eight children. Later they purchased range land on Lower Rock Creek when they expanded their operation to include cattle.
Ellen's main interest was her family and the activities of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She could be found in her yard working in the flowers, at the LDS Church doing genealogy or teaching classes, visiting friends and strangers at the Weiser Rehab and Care Center, taking food or garden produce to friends and acquaintances, tutoring at school, in the fields helping Bob, welcoming newcomers to the area, canvassing the city for favored political candidates and causes, or attending a multitude of activities such as high school musicals, scouting award meetings, football, baseball, volleyball, basketball, track, cross country, golf, soccer, 4-H, and piano recitals that her children and grandchildren were involved in.
She loved being active. Life became a burden to her when she knew she could no longer do the things she loved. There will be a beautiful empty spot in this world with her passing.
Ellen is survived by her husband of 58 years, Robert (Bob) Routson, four daughters and four sons, including Sally (Mrs. Lee Roy Eisenbarth) of Weiser, Susan (Mrs. Rex Winegar) of Weiser, Adella (Mrs. Lloyd Roberts) of Weiser, Michael (and wife Cindy) of Weiser, Samuel (and wife Marlyss) of Boise, Leonard (and wife Parma) of Hermiston, Ore., Dorothy (Mrs. Daryl Bingham) of West Jordan, Utah, and Edward of Weiser, one brother, Samuel Lamar Anderson Wright of Emmett, many nieces and nephews, 49 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters, a daughter-in-law Karol Routson, a granddaughter Kara Routson, and a great-grandson Lee Louis Wettstein.
