A native of Avery County, he was born a son of the late Jeffrey and Ollie Young Hughes.
Clayton was a member of the Roaring Creek Missionary Baptist Church. He worked as a logger and a farmer.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by; his wife, Evaie King Hughes; brothers, Carmon and Hermon Hughes; sisters, Pearl Gouge, Bell McKinney, Frankie McKinney and Bertha Gouge.
Survivors include; a dear friend and care giver, Louise Born of Newland and a sister, Vera Lee Hughes of Erwin, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Clayton Hughes will be held on Wednesday June 4th at 2:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Rev. Robbie Holtsclaw will officiate.
Interment will follow in the Hughes Cemetery on Roaring Creek.
