Paul was the son of Margaret A. L. Laverock of Burnaby British Columbia and David Laverock of Vancouver British Columbia dear brother of Susan, Peter, Alexandra, John, Carolyn and Michelle. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 13 1968 in Detroit Michigan and arrived in Vietnam on February 25 1969 where he was assigned for duty with Company D, 1st Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On April 30, Operation VIRGINIA RIDGE was launched in the Cam Lo, Huong Hoa, and Gio Linh Districts of Quang Tri Province. Company D was conducting a search ten kilometers northwest of Cam Lo on May 1 when it made its first brief contact and as the search progressed the Marines came under fire heavy machine gun fire from well concealed NVA bunkered positions. In a fire fight with an unknown heavily armed enemy force, supporting arms, mortars, artillery and air strikes were brought to bear on the enemy. The battle continued until the NVA retreated into the heavy undergrowth with the Marines gathering their casualties, pulling back and setting up a defensive perimeter for the night. The days contact was costly, nine men were killed in action and fifteen were wounded with one of the casualties being PFC Laverock who was killed by multiple gunshot wounds from hostile rifle fire.
