IN MEMORY

Melvin C. Rowland was born February 11, 1861, departed this life March 1, 1942, being 81 years, 17 days old. He was converted 32 years ago and remained a faithful Christian, but never united with any church. He was twice married. On February 13, 1888, he was married to Miss May Isbell, who died December 25. To this union was born one daughter,(text missing) Chattanooga; Frank Rowland, near Jones Chapel; Clure Rowland, near Athens, and Thomas Rowland who lives on his father's farm. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by 15 grand-children and 3 great-grand-children, 4 brothers, 3 sisters and a host of other relatives and friends, who are grieved over his passing. Uncle Mel, as he was called by his many friends had been in failing health for quite a while, but his death was a shock to his friends, as many of them didn't know he was any; worse than common. All that loving hands could do, was done for him, but God said "It's enough, come up higher." Uncle Mel had followed farming all his life and had lived his entire life in this community, where he was loved and respected by everyone. He was a good neighbor, always willing and ready to lend a helping hand, that would help anyone and to give good advice to those around him. Your were made to feel welcome when you visited his home. His doors were always open to everyone, and a hearty welcome to all. If ever a man lived without an enemy, Uncle Mel was one of them. He was much devoted to his family. His death means a sad loss, not only to the bereaved family, but to his close friends and acquaintances, who were many. He will be remembered as a loyal husband, and father by his heart broken wife and children, to whom I'm sure the people of this community extend their heartfelt sympathy.

Funeral services were held at Jones Chapel church, Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. D. T. Jones, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Frank Porter and J. W. Townsend. His remains were laid to rest in the New Cemetery near the church.

Pallbearers were five of his grandsons and one nephew. They were Herman Howard, Vernal, Rowland, R. D. Gentry, Billy Liner and Virgil Rowland. Flower girls were Regena, Katheleen, Phyllis, and Elizabeth Rowland, Irene, Ruby Lea and Louise Cooper.

The flowers were many and beautiful.
