Charles enlisted for Civil War service as a private in Company K of the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, August 11, 1862, at Westfield Township, Medina County Ohio for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Farmer. Detached as Provost guard, 3rd Division, 23rd Army Corps, October 25,1864. He was mustered out with Company K, June 12, 1865, at Raleigh, North Carolina, at the end of his term of service.

Charles's name is on the base of the tree trunk monument at Brighton Township Cemetery.
