Martha 'Mattie' is the daughter of Moses Black and Martha McAntier. Her father died in 1768 (she was four years old, at the time), making his children 'wards' or 'orphans', despite their mother still being alive. This was the conventional wisdom of the time.

In 1782, Mattie married David Mitchell who would become 'Judge' David Mitchell in Ohio. Records are unclear about the exact number of their children... some say 11, 12, or 13.

In their traveling from their home in PA, Martha 'Mattie' was pregnant with their (at least) eighth child. She gave birth on 4 Nov 1799 to the first male white child (Jesse) born in Union County.
