Charles "Chuck" Van Ryper, 90, of the Jackson District, was called home to be with his beloved wife, Lydia, and his precious Lord Jesus. He had been a patient at Minidoka Memorial Hospital for the last three months of his life and the family is so grateful for the excellent care that he received.

He was born to Charles A. and Mary Ann Richen Van Ryper on Feb. 14, 1918, at San Antonio, Texas. He grew up at Acequia, where he attended school. Chuck was unable to finish high school in his youth but graduated from Harriells High School in San Pablo, Calif. Following this, he earned a degree in bee culture while living there.

He married Lydia Mary Peters in Rupert on Nov. 21, 1935. They were to celebrate 68 years together. She died Nov. 23, 2003.

Chuck started his first bee-keeping business at Acequia. He later sold the company and the couple, along with their children, moved to California, where he and Lydia worked in the shipyards. During World War II, he was called into the military, where he served as a gunnery instructor at Fort Leonardwood, Mo. Following the war, the couple returned to California, where they worked and raised their family. In 1959, they returned to Idaho and established the Van Ryper Bee Company. The name Van Ryper is synonymous with bee culture and honey production throughout the state of Idaho and in other western states.

Chuck was a member of the Bee Keepers Association of Idaho and was affiliated with the Sioux Honey Company, the Rupert Grange and was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Rupert, where he served as a deacon. He was always present for any work detail as he had earned the right to be called a carpenter, plumber and all around "fix-it" man. He was a serious coin and stamp collector. He belonged to the Pigeon Racing Club while in California. He was an avid gardener and belonged to the iris and gladiolus clubs. He, Lydia and the family dearly loved the togetherness enjoyed over a rod and reel.

In addition to his wife, Chuck was preceded in death by his son, Merlin Charles; infant son, Johnnie Lloyd; a granddaughter whom they raised for five years, Tanya Van Ryper Hutcherson; grandson, Burton Van Ryper; and sister, Ina Smith.

Chuck is survived by his loving daughter, Susan Kay James of Burley; two grandsons, Robert James of Federal Way, Wash., and Troy Van Ryper of California; dear granddaughter, Brenda James of Burley; four great-grandsons, Bob, Brandon, Austin and Mathew; and his cherished great-granddaughter, Alyssa Bailes.
