Milton Johnson Stewart, 92, of Martinsville, died on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland, while visiting his son.

Milton was born in Covington, Kentucky, on January 19, 1916 to the late Glenn Hartwell and Magnolia (Johnson) Stewart.

On June 1, 1940 he married Ruth (Hayden) Stewart. She preceded him in death on May 2, 2003.

At the age of 6, he began playing the violin and progressed to study at the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, OH. Only 4 years later, at the age of 10, he began playing the French horn, accordion, guitar and almost every band and orchestra instrument. He also spent summers studying music at the University of Kansas.

He graduated high school in Logan, W.V. and entered Asbury College in Kentucky to study music for the next three years. He later transferred to the University of Kentucky and graduated with a bachelor's degree in music.

In 1939 he began his teaching career in Kentucky and pioneered music education for disabled children. In 1941 he entered the U.S. Army and was assigned to assemble the 726th U.S. Army Air Force Band. He served with the U.S. Army Air Force until May 1, 1946. After returning from the military, he continued his education in music and earned his bachelor of music degree in violin from the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati and his master of education degree in administration from the University of Cincinnati in 1952.

He taught music and drama in Coldwater and New Madison, Ohio before accepting the position of band, orchestra and choir director and music coordinator for the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville. He spent the next 25 years of his career teaching, directing and inspiring the children of Martinsville the love of music. He retired in 1981.

He was past president of the Martinsville Kiwanis Club, a member of the Covington, Kentucky Masonic Lodge and the First United Methodist Church in Martinsville.

He is survived by his son, Milton J. Stewart, II of Stevensville, MD; four grandchildren, Milton Stewart, III, Paul Stewart, Caliane McClain and Lisa Mays and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, son, Hinton Lee Stewart; three brothers, Paul, Bruce and Aubrey Stewart and two sisters, Etna Lenox and Genie Hill.
