For three summers, he worked with the Boy Gang of the Great Northern Railroad, which made repairs on railroad tracks. The last summer, as the Boy Gang returned home, their motorcar exploded resulting in Darrell's arms being burned and bruised.
In 1944, Darrell joined the U.S. Navy at age 16. He was shipped to Saipan where they refueled and left for Guam during WWII. He also was in the Philippines and Japan. Five years later, he went to Korea. After the Korean War, he had shore duty on Military Sea Transportation while stationed in Japan. He was in Tokyo and Yokahama for four years then was transferred to Hawaii. In Hawaii, he ran PT boats and Search & Rescue. He retired from the Navy as a W3 Boatsmate. He returned to Ellendale after serving his country for 20 years.
On September 15, 1966, Darrell married Maggie Zimmerman. In 1969, he began working for the Dickey County Leader where he was employed for 18 years.
He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Ellendale. He died February 14, 2003 at his home in Ellendale.
Survivors include a half-sister, Ina Putnal; and aunt, Edna Kabrud. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, wife, one sister, and two half-sisters.
