Thomas Elijah Sommer was born in Erdannhausen, Wuerrtemberg, Germany on 5 November 1839, the third child of Johann Adam and Magdalena Barbara (Wallmersperger) Sommer. Thomas's siblings were Eva Magdalena, Gottlob Adam, Carl Friedrich, David Immanuel, Christina Catharina, and Johannes Jacob.

Thomas and his family immigrated to the United States about 1860. They initially settled in Marion County, Ohio, but soon moved to Jay County, Indiana.

On 11 May 1864 Thomas enlisted as a Private in the Union Army: Company A, Indiana 23rd Infantry. He was mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, on 23 July 1865.

On 20 October 1874 Thomas was married to Magdalena Yaeger in St James Lutheran Church in Salamonia, Indiana. Thomas and Layne became the parents of seven children: Mary Magdalena [Baldauf], Frederick Adam, Emma Matilda [Baldauf], Caroline Louisa [Inskeep], Ella Barbara, Anna Christina, and Otto Heinrich.

Thomas died of lung disease in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, on 14 January 1903.
