Born in Altamura, Province of Bari, Italy, on April 24, 1927, Monsignor Donato Squicciarini was ordained to the Priesthood at 25 years of age at the Cathedral of Altamura on April 12, 1952. Successively, he moved to Rome to pursue further studies, earning Degrees in Theology and Canon Law.

Entering the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1958, he served at the Apostolic Nunciatures in Panama and later in Colombia in 1960. The following year, Squicciarini was moved to the Apostolic Nunciature in Germany, which was at the time under the direction of Monsignor Corrado Bafile (1903 - 2005), Future Cardinal Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

Serving in the Nunciature of Turkey, Monsignor Donato organized Pope Paul VI's trip to the latter Muslim country. Between 1975 and 1978, Squicciarini served in the Apostolic Nunciature of Austria, under Msgr. Opilio Rossi (1910 - 2004), Future Cardinal President of the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses.

During his short term of Papacy, Pope John Paul I, elevated Monsignor Donato to the position of Apostolic Nuncio to Burundi on August 31, 1978. He received his Episcopal Consecration with the Titular Archbishopric See of Tiburnia from Cardinal Franz König, assisted by Cardinal Giuseppe Caprio and Archbishop Salvatore Isgró inside the Cathedral of Altamura on November 26, 1978, choosing the words "Veritas et Caritas" as his Episcopal Motto.

When Msgr. Giuseppe Uhac (1924 - 1998), was appointed Apostolic Pro - Nuncio to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Archbishop Donato was named as his Successor as Apostolic Pro - Nuncio to Gabon, Cameron and Equatorial Guinea on September 16, 1981. Aged 62, he was named Apostolic Nuncio in Austria, on July 1, 1989, following the demise of Msgr. Michele Cecchini at the age of 69.

During the nearly thirteen year period of tenure of the named Office in Austria, Msgr. Donato faced among others the scandal of Cardinal Hans Hermann Groër OSB., of the See of Vienna and the Kirchenvolk Movement. His name became notably known during a controversy that involved Kurt Waldheim's decoration with the Order of Pius IX. Donato Squicciarini received the "Austrian Decoration of Honor" in 2000, and retired from the Nunciature at the age of 75 on October 8, 2002, with Msgr. Giorgio Zur being named as his Successor.

Archbishop Donato Squicciarini died in Rome after a lengthy illness on March 5, 2006, aged 78. His Funeral Mass was said at Saint Peter's Patriarchal Vatican Basilica on Tuesday, March 7, presided by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Cardinal Secretary of State of the Vatican City. Another Requiem Mass was celebrated at Altamura's Cathedral on Wednesday, March 8, at 15.30 hrs., presided by Archbishop Luigi Travaglino prior to internment at the local Cemetery. The Mass saw the participation among others of Cardinals Michele Giordano, Giovanni Cheli, Achille Silvestrini, Jean Louis Tauran and Francesco Marchisano, along with several Bishops and priests.
