Bessie Powers Smith, 90, a longtime resident of East Wenatchee, passed away Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Central Washington Hospital.

She was born on Nov. 28, 1907, in Salyersville, Ky. She married Eddie Powers of Mashfork, Ky., in 1925. They moved to East Wenatchee in 1934 and were orchardists until his death in 1973.

Bessie married John H.D. Smith of Orondo in 1980 and resided there until his death in 1988.

She was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in East Wenatchee. She also was a member of the Orondo Grange, the Rebekah Lodge of Wenatchee and a member of the Kelly Lucas American Legion Auxiliary (World War II). She was noted for her award-winning crochet work, gardening and dedicated homemaking.

She is survived by her children, Winfred Powers of Tukwila, Nettie Mae Jourdan of Seattle and Shirley Kinney of Clarksville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley in East Wenatchee.
