Jimita grew up in Mishawaka, Indiana, the middle of the five children of Libero and Lucille (Nowak) Baldoni. She grew up on the south side of Mishawaka, in the St. Bavo's neighborhood. She graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1968 and earned her bachelor's degree at Ball State University. On October 15, 1977, she married Phillip Potter at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame. In the early years of their marriage, she and her husband lived in Georgia and Alabama. She taught 7th graders in Georgia before her children were born; after they were grown, she taught social studies to students in an alternative high school. In later years, she did administrative work at University of Notre Dame. Jimita was active with the Junior League of South Bend for 20 years. She enjoyed golfing, especially with her daughters.
