Rites Wednesday for John W. Byrd

Final tribute was paid John W. Byrd, on of Okolona's oldest and most highly respected citizens, at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon when a large number of relatives and friends assembled in the Chapel of the Barry Funeral Home. The rites were conducted by the Rev. B L Mohon, pastor of the Baptist Church, of which Mr. Byrd was a member. Burial was in the I O O F Cemetery with Barry in charge.

The pallbearers were Harold Blaylock, W D Hodges, James Hill, W G Chenault, W C Chandler and Jack McDearman.

Mr. Byrd, who would have been 85 in June, died about 11:00 o'clock Monday night of a heart attack. He had apparently been perfectly well until a short time before he passed away.

Mr. Byrd, a son of the late George Byrd and the late Mrs. Louisa Jane Sanders Byrd, was born and reared in Model, Tenn. On November 25, 1894, he was married to Miss. Margaret Seawright of Dover, Tenn., and they lived in Dover for more than six years before going to Murray Kentucky, where they resided until December 1925 when they moved to Okolona.

Mr. Byrd, a retired farmer and dairyman, disposed of his suburban property several years ago and purchased a home on South Gatlin Street. He remained active and for a time assisted W D Hodges in the operation of a grist mill. He enjoyed working in his home garden and with flowers. He had a wide circle of admiring friends and greeted everyone with a cheerful smile. He possessed a keen sense of humor.

In addition to his devoted wife, he leaves two sons, Dr. Lloyd E Byrd of Worcester, Mass., and E Seawright Byrd of Detroit, Mich., both of whom arrived here Tuesday night; two sister, Mrs. Jenie Acree and Mrs. Ida Robinson, both of Dover, Tenn., four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Other relatives here for the services were Mrs. E Seawright Byrd and Rugene Byrd of Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. U S Byrd of Louisville, Ky., and R S Byrd of Falmouth, Ky., Mrs. Frank Haley of Tupelo was here for the rites.
