ALBANY, OREGON, March 20--Alexander Sumpter, a veteran pioneer of Oregon, died at his home nine miles east of Albany last Friday, at the advanced age of 93 years.

Mr. Sumpter had spent a great part of his life in Linn County, and was known and respected by all. He was born in East Tennessee on the 10th [6th] day of May, 1810. When yet an infant, Alexander was taken to Kentucky by his parents, and received his early education there. During the gold fever of 1849 he came west to California by ox team. Soon after, however, he returned to St. Louis, where he married Miss Nancy Prather/Prater. In 1853 Alexander Sumpter, with his wife, came to Oregon and located in the Willamette Valley, near the present site of Albany, where he has since resided.

Alexander Sumpter has a remarkable record. At the time of his death, he had 278 descendants. These were divided into 12 children, 86 grandchildren, 162 great grandchildren and 17 great great grandchildren.
