Mr. Gaines was born near Jamestown, Missouri, November 19, 1836. His parents were pioneers of that section. In 1852 he crossed the plains with his parents and settled at the forks of the Santiam River. The community was later known by that name and is familiar to all the pioneers of that state. Aside from a few years spent at St. Johns, Mrs. Gaines has resided at his original home in this state.
He is survived by Frank Gaines and Artimus Gaines of St. Johns; Mrs. Eva Davenport, Mrs. Ina Stoddard and Mrs. Sarah Leever of Providence; Dory Gaines of Portland; Lee Gaines of the Gaines neighborhood, and Haman Gaines of Lebanon. There is also a brother, Samuel Gaines of Scio, and a sister, Mrs. Anna South of Independence.
