James Curl and his wife were remarkable people with very big hearts. Not only did they raise a large family of their own, they also raised a niece and nephew to maturity.

One of his biggest life accomplishments was that he was a member of the Oregon Territorial Legislature. The other being the fact that he was the Superintendent of a very large wagon train of pioneers to Oregon in 1847 from April 15 to September 15, 1847. The wagon train was made up of three wagons. They had voted him Superintendent of all wagon groups.

Captain James Curl—Captain of the main wagon train and Commissioner of Shelton, Cyrus, & Curl, wagons from Andrew and Buchanan and Jackson Counties, Missouri. 2. James Fulkerson and Rev. Richard Miller, Co-Commissioners of The Plains Baptist Church group from Jefferson City, Missouri area and Nodaway Co. 3. Judge Kimsey , a group from Holt Co. and C. W. Cooke from Buchanan Co., Missouri. The pioneers of the first wagon group mostly settled in and around Linn County, Oregon. They came by way of the Barlow Trail. The other two groups mostly settled in Polk and Marion Counties, Oregon. They came by way of the river route.
