Ray began his career in junior football with Red Rovers and then had a brief spell with Wolverhampton Wanderers before the outbreak of war. Joining Chelsea in 1946 he spent two years at Stamford Bridge, making 15 appearances and scoring 1 goal.
He moved to Plymouth Argyle in June 1948. He was appointed captain on his arrival at Home Park, but his time at centre-half was disrupted by injury. Finding himself out of the team after less than 18 months, he moved to Exeter City, where he made over 130 appearances in 5 years.
Following his retirement from professional football, he became player-manager of Bideford.
