He was a prominent member of the Old Road Mennonite Church along with his older brother John and Brother-In-Law Jacob Mast.

The Reeser Genealogy written by Robert Reeser in November 2014 states the following about Nicholas. He was married to Sarah Mast Reeser who was a sister to Catherine Mast. His oldest brother John and brother-in-law Jacob Mast were identified as probable attendees of Old Road Mennonite Church in whose cemetery they were later buried. It is believed that they had defected from the dwindling Compassville congregation during the 1840s. Nicholas lived on the Compass Road homestead of his father in Salisbury Township. His father's will gave him first choice to rent.
