"A South Hammond Quarry"
Herbert Gibson owned a sandstone quarry in South Hammond and lived in the second house past the "Hadlock House" in South Hammond on what is now Route 37. The red stone quarried from this site was used to build, for example, Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Brier Hill around 1940. Before 1940, Catholics in Brier Hill had to attend St. John's in Morristown. That year Rev. Noel Zimmerman, priest of St. John's, decided that Brier Hill should have its own Catholic church, not only for local people but for many of the summer visitors. Mrs. Sarah Moore deeded a lot on Main St. for the church, and ground was broken May 15, 1940. The stone work was done by Merle Bulger, then living in Morristown, and much of the labor was donated. Many of the proceeds came from money-raising functions such as socials, supers and roller skating parties, for a while three times a week. A group of women from the vicinity even sponsored a benefit card party. Attendees included Mrs. Ross Jacquith, Mrs. John Manning, Mrs. Albert McDonald, Mrs. Alex McDonald, Mrs. Garrett Brennan, Mrs. Thomas Brown, Mrs. John Cornelis and Mrs. Frank Perretta. The cornerstone was laid in a special ceremony July 28 and the church was finally dedicated on August 27, 1944, shortly after its completion. Seventeen families belonged to the church at this time, excluding summer tourists.
