Joyce Ann Cummins Dingmore, 77, departed this life Saturday, May 17, 2008, at a Springfield, Mo., hospital.
Graveside service: 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Memorial service was 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, at University Heights Baptist Church in Springfield, Mo.
Joyce Ann Cummins Dingmore was born June 18, 1930, to Fletcher L. and Jessie Lawrence Cummins in Fort Worth. She attended schools in Fort Worth, graduating from Carter-Riverside High School. Joyce attended Howard Payne University in Brownwood and graduated from Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth.
Joyce and Norman Dingmore were married Nov. 21, 1953, and they celebrated more than 54 years of marriage. She was an elementary school teacher and her first assignment was at Oakhurst Elementary School in Fort Worth, where she had attended elementary school. Joyce and Norman lived in several locations due to his work, and she taught in Albuquerque, N.M., Fresno, Calif., Raleigh, N.C., and in the Birdville schools.
When she taught in Raleigh she participated in a special reading program that was sponsored by then-Gov. James Hunt. Gov. Hunt encouraged volunteers to spend time in the classroom listening to a child reading. He also became a volunteer and for one of the years she taught in Raleigh, Gov. Hunt came to her class once a week as a reading volunteer. She said that she probably had the only school class guarded once a week by the state police!
Joyce ended her career at West Birdville Elementary School as a special reading teacher. Both Joyce and Norman retired in 1990.
In 1996 they moved to Kimberling City, Mo. In 2000 they moved to the Springfield, Mo., area and she was living in Battlefield, Mo., at the time of her death. She was a member of University Heights Baptist Church in Springfield.
Survivors: Husband, Norman; sons, Norman L. Dingmore and wife, Ellen of Keller and John Dingmore of Reno, Nev.; grandchildren, Erin and Emily Dingmore and Austin and Allison Stanley; and sister, Doris Moody and husband, Jess of Palm Gardens, Fla.
