Musician, Monologuist, Social Advocate. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, he was an influential folk performer best known for the song "Daddy, What's a Train?" and the humorous monologue "Moose Turd Pie". The punchline from the latter provided the title of his first album, "Good Though" (1973). Throughout his four-decade career Phillips was a strong voice for unions and an advocate for the homeless. In 2000, he shared a Grammy nomination with Ani DiFranco for the album "Fellow Workers". He also worked with such artists as Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez and Emmylou Harris. He died of complications from heart disease.
